NOBODY HAS TO BE THREATENED ANYMORE

Yesterday we walked through what the Democratic Socialists of America published on July 14 - abolishing the Senate, defunding the Department of War, phasing out fossil fuels, universal rent control, public ownership of major industry, a new constitution.

The obvious question is why almost no Democrat in Washington will say a word against any of it. The answer is not that they all agree. The answer is that they watched what happened this summer to the ones who were in the way, and after that nobody needs to be threatened.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ONES IN THE WAY

On June 23, in New York's Thirteenth District, a DSA-backed challenger named Darializa Avila Chevalier unseated Congressman Adriano Espaillat, the sitting chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. The same night, Congressman Dan Goldman lost his primary too, and nine of the ten DSA candidates on the ballot in New York City won theirs. One week later, on June 30, in Colorado's First District, a twenty-nine-year-old DSA-backed challenger named Melat Kiros ended Diana DeGette's career after fifteen terms.

Thirty years in the House. A caucus chairmanship. Neither was enough.

Every Democrat in Congress read those results the same week, and every one of them can do the arithmetic. You do not have to agree with a faction that can end your career. You only have to avoid crossing it.

AND THEY HAVE STARTED SETTING TERMS

This is the part that shows it is not merely a mood. At its national convention in August of last year, the organization adopted a resolution, R22, by a vote of 675 to 524. It makes a candidate's position on Israel and on the boycott campaign against it a condition of receiving a DSA endorsement, and it makes certain statements by members grounds for expulsion. An amendment to strip the expulsion language out was offered by members who thought it went too far. It failed.

That is not a coalition partner making a request. That is an organization writing terms and enforcing them on its own people first.

READ HOW THEY DESCRIBE THE PARTY THEY ARE TAKING OVER

You might assume a faction inside a party would flatter it. Read their preamble instead. It says the Republicans are in on it and the Democratic Party is asleep at the wheel, and that both are funded by the same class of billionaires and war profiteers.

They are not asking for a seat at the table. They have said plainly that they intend to replace the two-party system altogether. They are the energy, the volunteers, the small-dollar money and the primary electorate, and everyone in that party knows it. That is what makes them the faction nobody crosses.

SO NAME ONE

Here is the entire question, and it is a fair one to ask any congressman:

Name one demand in that document Shomari Figures will publicly reject.

Abolishing the Senate that gives Alabama an equal vote with California. Defunding the Department of War, with Fort Rucker in his own district. Phasing out the fuels this state produces. Amnesty for all immigrants regardless of status. Redirecting police funding as a step toward, in the program's own words, fully abolishing the police and prison system. Universal rent control.

We are not going to tell you he holds those positions, because he has not said he does. We will tell you what the record shows. He voted for a symbolic resolution against socialism in November, which cost him nothing. And in the eight months since, as this faction published a program, unseated two Democratic incumbents and began imposing conditions on its endorsements, we can find no public statement from him about any of it.

Symbolic votes are free. Silence is a choice, and it is being made in the direction of the people who decide primaries.

THE BOTTOM LINE

A congressman who will not say which parts of that document he opposes has told you everything about who he is afraid of. It is not the voters of Dale County.

Six Republicans are on the August 11 ballot. Which one carries this district is for the voters of the Second District to decide - not a committee in Washington, and not this newsletter. Our fight is with the incumbent and the money behind him.
